Our Learning Journal

What We’ve Been Learning {Winter 2023/24}

March is here, spring is upon us and I realized I never documented the our learning adventures we had over the past few months! While we had a mild winter (with one big snow), it seemed to drag on quite a bit. Possibly because we were passing around a virus the entire month of February…. However, we did enjoy a few outings and learned (or re-learned) some new things.

Family Learning Time

We are still journeying through American History with our Gather ‘Round Homeschool curriculum and have made it to the Civil War. The girls, especially, have enjoyed this and we have had many good discussions on some difficult subject. The boys enjoy the picture books we read to go along with our “spine” and the girls were excited to find Imagination Station chapter books that matched up with what we were learning. I’m so thankful for good stories that bring history alive!

In Bible, we started the book of Joshua. The plan is to read one chapter a day and discuss, but we often miss days. (Just being honest!) We also memorized/reviewed one of my many favorite Bible verses.

What have I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid. Do not be dismayed. For the Lord God is with you wherever you go.

Joshua 1:9

My favorite nature walk was at a new-to-us nature center. We enjoyed a hike with friends on a mild day in December on a trail that was festooned with wooden cut-outs of Christmas sweaters. It was a lot of fun to see all the creative ways different people had decorated them. I think we may volunteer to do one ourselves next year! 🙂

The girls and I visited a local art museum with friends as a Girls’ Day Out at the end of December, which was so nice. I had forgotten how much I enjoy slowly perusing museums. We don’t make it to many in this season of life because it tends to be a bit stressful with littles that have a hard time keeping their hands to themselves.

We also had the opportunity to visit the local zoo with some friends in January. What a fun day that was! Because it was cold, we practically had the whole place to ourselves. We enjoyed a bird show, explored the new aquarium and viewed a few other indoor exhibits.

At home we also enjoyed playing plenty of board games and watching YouTube videos or movies (especially when we were sick).

Individual Projects

We are currently using Khan Academy for math and it seems to be working well for all of us. Everyone is still working on consistency, but progress is being made and they are enjoying it—for the most part. 🙂

The kids made a few crafts for Christmas gifts, which was fun.

When it’s cold, the girls tend to do a lot of baking, so we enjoyed plenty of yummy cookies and other treats. All of the kids have been taking turns helping with meal prep and cooking as well. So much natural learning can be done in the kitchen!

Mother Culture

Most of my learning over the winter months was through reading books and listening to podcasts.

One topic I’ve been focusing on lately is walking. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do more of for many reasons. Two books that have really inspired me in this area are Grandma Gatewood’s Walk and 52 Ways to Walk. One is a biography about an amazing woman that hiked the Appalachians and the other is an inspirational and informational book about the benefits of walking. I highly recommend both!

As far as hobbies go, I’ve been doing a bit of graphic design on Canva and recently gave the blog a makeover. Do you like the new look? 🙂

What have you been learning over the past few months? I’d love for you to share in a comment!
